Giving
Cairns Road Baptist Church is a charity under the umbrella of the Baptist Union.
The church is self-supporting and it is our aim to be as generous as possible.
We regard giving as an expression of worship, and commitment to both God and the church. To encourage this, there is opportunity to give weekly during Sunday morning services.
As a charity, Cairns Road Baptist Church can reclaim tax from the Inland Revenue if giving is made through the Gift Aid scheme. Information is available from the church office.
Labyrinth
During Lent 2007 we met to consider and explore the Easter Story from different perspectives. This included times of meditation on the main themes of shock, betrayal, failure, doubt, is God dead?, hope and resurrection.
During Easter week, a Labyrinth was set out in the upper hall. This was inspiring for all those who 'walked the line' and encouraged us to set this out again in the future.
We also had a creative writing group. Some extracts of their work are included below
Shock
The very stones will cry out, cry out, cry out
The very stones will cry out at the things they have seen
The rocks are shocked at what they see
They are shocked to be used as weapons
They are shocked to be used to be thrown at children
They are shocked to be used to kill.
They were used in Rwanda when I was there
They are used in Palestine now
They are hurled in Iraq, Iran, Zaire
Out of shock and trauma and fear.
And if they could speak they would cry out and say
'We do not want to be used this way
We were created by God as foundation stones
We were meant for good, not abused this way'
And the way to the cross is paved with stones
And they cry out in shock as Jesus walks to his death
And a rock was used as a door to the tomb
And it cried out in triumph as Jesus rose from his death.
And the Suffering Servant senses the cries
Of his people as they cry out in pain
And he says 'Come to me as that Living Stone
And you will never be thirsty again'
More than it sounds
More than it sounds
Even now - it often isn't how it sounds
Execution - a neat word with lean, sharp edges
Even now - it often isn't how it ought to be
And we see reports of heads rolling when they shouldn't
- And the time they couldn't stop someone in the crowd
Shouting abuse out loud so that it was caught on camera
Putting to shame any claims about human rights
And the chair-
Where the first try fails to fry well enough
And the crowd spy through a glass panel at endless last moments
Even now,
It isn't often seen that you have been through much worse -
You died - Crucified
In a vile, lingering agony that was meant to be this way
Nothing went wrong - it always was a long, deliberate process
And those watching needed a strong stomach
We say ?
He was crucified, He died for us
Just a few words - such a small sentence - but -
It was much, much worse than it sounds
I Want
I want
I like what's going on - being here - doing this
But
I want to know what you want
Does that mean
That I'm wanting to be in the driving seat
By wanting to know what you want?
Or
Does it mean
That my wanting to know what you want
Is me wanting you to be in the driving seat?
And
Is me wanting you to be in the driving seat
Turning it into what I want instead of what you want?
I want has horrible overtone -
I want! - I want! - I want!
The swansong of an only child I was always told
I was an only child and
Now
I'm your child
I want to be
What you want me to be
Godforsaken
When
We say
The word
Godforsaken
We make
A mistake
And have taken
The name
Of God
In vain
For he'll never
Take himself away
He'll stay
Forever constant
Whatever we've done
Whenever we come
And take
The mistakes,
The hate
Or
The heavy hand of fate
To him
He will make it clear
There is nothing to fear
He is always near
Hear this
And let's make
A pact
To take out that word -
The absurd
'Godforsaken'
Poetry
A writing group at Cairns Road generates poetry and prose, often prompted by our thinking together or world events.
Here is a recent poem entitled 'Jesus is not Lord?'
Jesus is not Lord
If his Lordship is some abstract fact
Stored on a high shelf like my best silver;
Gracing the table on festive occasions,
But too refined for everyday use.
No!
His Lordship must resonate
In every God-forsaken acre
Of this care-sodden, jack-boot trodden world.
Or He is not Lord at all.
The kingdom of God is a sham
If it offers nothing but
Cloud-floating, harp playing,
Sweeties ever after in the Ever After
But famine in the Here and Now.
No!
His kingdom must erupt
On the childless mother, stolen child
The embittered, battered, beggared.
Or it is no King-dom at all.
Church is a sad charade
If we try to offset
The short-weight of our compassion
With the gold in our pockets;
Fearing ethical or physical contagion.
No!
The Church must jostle
In perilous proximity
With the shunned and shamed; the minced and maimed.
Or we are not His body at all.
